Chennamma Stadium near finishing line
State plans Jan inauguration by CM; Rs 6 cr spent so far, Rs 5 cr more to be released
TheBruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has spent nearly Rs 6 crore to construct the Kittur Rani Chennamma Stadium at Jayanagar during the past five years. An additional Rs 5 crore is required to give finishing touches to what promises to be a stadium of international standards.
When completed, it would be the only stadium after Kanteerava where a number of sports can be played under one roof. District in-charge minister K Ramalinga Reddy, who inspected the site on Monday, announced that the plan is to have the stadium inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in January.
Reddy asked officials to speed up pending works at thegymnasium , dormitory , toilet blocks , and the cultural stage. He said, “The stadium is awaited as an alternative to Kanteerava. Schools belonging to the south zone, like Jayanagar, BTM Layout, Banashankari, etc. are currently heading to the Kanteerava stadium for their sporting requirements.Henceforth, they need not go there as all facilities will be available at here. Officials have demanded immediate release of Rs 5 crore to give finishing touches. Funds will be released under my discretionary quota.”
Local corporator N Nagaraj (Byrasandra) claimed that work is at its final stages and he has asked engineers to concentrate only on the stadium. He said, “We have given priority to quality work. Not just cricket, even athletics has been given importance. The construction of a cultural stage is nearing completion and so far Rs 92 lakh has been spent on it. Work will be completed by November 30. The cultural stage is 26 feet high and 60 feet wide with two dressing rooms at the rear. More than 10,000 people can witness cultural programmes in the stadium.” Jayanagar MLA B N Vijaykumar said a statue of Kittur Rani Chennamma will also be erected at the stadium. “We are preparing an estimate for the same. Other pending works will be completed by December end.”
