Mystery over worker death
HOWRAH: A casual employee of Mahadeb Jute Mill in Belur died under mysterious circumstances after falling from a height at the mill’s general manager’s Liluah home on Sunday evening.
Azgar Ali’s family alleged they saw injury marks on his body and suspect he was either beaten up or pushed off. General manager Sarat Jha, who for the last one week had engaged the worker as a mason for building his house, described the death as unfortunate, but denied the allegations.
“It was probably an accident,” he said.
Azgar’s colleagues agitated outside the gate against Jha’s taking a casual worker off mill duty and engaging him on personal work. The family has lodged a murder complaint at Belur police station against Jha. ACP (North), Howrah City Police, Srihari Pandey, said: “We are awaiting the autopsy report. The GM will also be questioned.”
