Kashmiri goes missing in city, family says he was ‘picked up’

The family has a copy of the daily diary entry (no 14PP) at the police station.

A young Kashmiri businessman has been missing from Azadpur Mandi from the day before Diwali. His family has been knocking at police stations with a letter of introduction from an Army officer posted near their home in Rampur near Uri.

According to the family, Kifayat Khan, 25, who had come with apples from Baramulla, left Azadpur Mandi after telling the driver of his truck that he was going shopping to the Jama Masjid area. He left his cellphone behind in the truck, but did not return.

“Around 10 that night, the driver, Fayaz Ahmad, called us,” Kifayat’s brother-in-law Tariq Ahmad Khan said.

“We fear he might have been picked up by some (security) agency. We have searched everywhere, been to every police station in the area, checked with his friends and acquaintances,” he said.

The family says it has been showing police a letter from Col. Vijayant Yadav, deputy commander of 161 Infantry Brigade at Uri, requesting help. “He stays next to our camp and his uncles work at our camp,” Col. Yadav has written.

Festive offer

Tariq said Kifayat’s father-in-law Mohammad Maqbool had reached Delhi on October 23, but the Azadpur police had refused to register an FIR.

DCP (Northwest) Gyan Sambandhan said a missing report has been filed and details have been circulated.

“The man reached Delhi on the night of November 21. On November 22, he took Rs 10,000 from his co-truck driver, who has told us that he went to Jama Masjid to buy blankets but didn’t return. We have informed hospitals, mortuaries and police stations in the area,” the DCP said.

Told of the family’s fears of him having been picked up, Sambandhan said, “The family has to give that to us in writing. Investigation will be carried out accordingly.”
