Twin towers hearing in SC after 2 weeks

NEW DELHI/NOIDA: The Supreme Court on Friday took cognizance of the various special leave petitions (SLP) filed in the Emerald Court twin towers case. A demolition of the two 40-storey residential towers, Apex and Ceyane, built in Noida by realty major Supertech was ordered by the Allahabad high court earlier this year for violation of building norms. The apex court has stayed the demolition and is now hearing the case.
The company has, meanwhile, started issuing cheques to the 53 buyers who had first moved the Supreme Court for refunds. The payments are being made with a 14% interest on principal as on April, 2014. Another set of 19 buyers who had filed separate SLPs for refunds are awaiting payments.
Taking cognizance of the SLPs, the Supreme Court proposed a hearing after two weeks once each party in the case, including buyers and the Noida Authority, file their affidavits
"Today's hearing was a step forward for us," UBS Teotia, the RWA president of Emerald Court, who is also the chief petitioner against Supertech in the case, told TOI.
"The hearing was adjourned today, but even we are looking forward to a speedy disposal of the case. We understand the buyers' concerns. The refunds are being carried out, and we now await the final judgment," a Supertech spokesperson said.
