Senior Nigerian police officer dies in detention

A senior police officer in central north Nigeria's Kaduna State was allegedly to have committed suicide on Friday in custody, according to police authorities.

Nambol Audu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and State Chief Armorer was arrested on Monday for stealing firearms.

He was reported to have shot himself on the chest while in detention on Friday morning.

Confirming the incident, the State Commissioner of Police, Umar Shehu said preliminary investigation revealed that the late officer killed himself and however denied that the police officer may have been murdered while in detention.

According to the commissioner, full investigation into the incident has commenced.

It was not clear on how the chief armorer got the gun with which he shot himself since he was in police custody.

The late Audu and two others were on Monday, arrested as they drove into the police armory at night where they loaded firearms into a private vehicle. Endi
