Society comes forward to fund dedicated software for malaria [Mangalore] [Times of India]

(Times of India Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) MANGALORE: City's quest for dedicated software to track vector borne disease malaria received a major fillip with the board of Mangalore Medical Relief Society approving to bear the cost involved in developing the same. While a commercially developed software would have set Mangalore City Corporation back by nearly Rs 20 lakh, this software that is being developed for the civic body by Infosys will cost around a quarter of the cost.

Informing the council of City Corporation of this development at the monthly meeting here on Wednesday, Mayor Mahabala Marla said members of the society including Dr K R Shetty, and Dr Shantharam Baliga, who are also on board the city's anti-malaria control programme have agreed to bear the cost of software development. "The society made this open offer at a meeting held with me recently, and I have accepted their offer," Mayor said.

Gokuldas Nayak, in charge commissioner later told TOI that Infosys has come forward to develop the software at basic price that includes covering the costs of a team of software developers working on it. "The move by the Society to fund the project will ensure that the work on it gets going and we can now hope to have the software ready in next two days," he said, adding a similar commercial effort would have cost at least Rs 20 lakh.

The corporation will simultaneously work on providing the hardware needed to support the software so developed, he said. The corporation has plans to arm its battery of around 50 multi-purpose workers with tabs with this embedded software that they can use out in the field, he said, adding the Corporation is mulling to make use of an offer made by Mangalore unit of CREDAI to fund purchase of these tabs and the Mayor will take a call on it.
