Durban - The premiere of a documentary film about the life of struggle veteran Ahmed Kathrada was held in Durban on Thursday evening, the film's producer said.

“Kathy (Kathrada) is an exceptional man who has given his entire life to the freedom of our people,” producer Anant Singh said in a statement on Friday.

“Our film is a tribute to him and we hope that it inspires people, especially the youth, to emulate his example.”

The film features interviews with Kathrada's political mentors; fellow Rivonia trialists including former president Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu and Denis Goldberg; fellow Robben Island prisoners, close friends and colleagues.

The film, “Ahmed Kathrada: A Man For All Seasons”, tracks Kathrada's life from his activist roots, through the Rivonia treason trial and his time in prison to the present day, including the founding of the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation.

Kathrada, 85, spent 26 years in prison following his conviction in the Rivonia treason trial.

He attended the premiere along with former correctional services minister Sbu Ndebele, author Gcina Mhlope and former high court judge Thumba Pillay.
