BERHAMPUR: A Medical Council of India (MCI) team on Thursday visited the MKCG Medial College and Hospital to assess infrastructure before taking a call on the hospital’s plea for increasing seats and open new post graduate (PG) courses.
The medical college has sought to increase 79 seats in post graduate courses — 65 in existing 17 departments and 14 in five new departments — from the next academic year.
At present, MKCG has 95 PG seats.
The authorities want to introduce PG courses in psychiatry, TB and chest, radiology, radio therapy and cardiology.
"The MCI team has visited the college over the last three days. They assessed the infrastructure in 20 out of 22 departments. They enquired about staff strength and availability of equipment," said principal Arun Kumar Dandapat. The team may visit the college again to inspect the other two departments, he added.
A senior professor said the MCI team seemed satisfied with the facilities.
The government has decided to upgrade the MKCG Medical College and Hospital, the only government referral hospital in south Odisha, to a super specialty hospital. At least five more buildings will come up on hospital premises soon.
