Train services resumed as normalcy returns to Rameswaram

Train services were resumed to and from Rameswaram on Friday morning, a day after fishermen went on a rampage and damaged tracks.

MADURAI: Train services were resumed to and from Rameswaram on Friday morning, a day after fishermen went on a rampage and damaged tracks to protest against the death sentence given to five Tamil Nadu fishermen by a Sri Lankan court.
The fishermen damaged railway tracks in almost one-km stretch near Thangachimadam on Thursday evening, forcing the Railways either to cancel or reschedule or regulate train services.

Normalcy returned to the area on Friday morning.
Railway workers completed the repair works by 10am. They fixed the damaged fish plates.
According to a statement from the Railways, Train no. 16102 Rameswaram – Chennai Egmore Express, scheduled to leave Rameswaram at 5pm on Thursday, left the station at 10am on Friday.
Train no. 16714 Rameswaram – Chennai Egmore Sethu Express left the station by 10.30am.
Train no. 22621 Rameswaram – Kanniyakumari Express left Rameswaram at 11am.
Passenger train services to Madurai were also resumed.
Earlier, train no. 16734 OKHA-Rameswaram Express was regulated at Ramanathapuram and 342 passengers were transported to Rameswaram on six TNSTC buses.
Train Number 16713 Chennai Egmore - Rameswaram Sethu Express was regulated on arrival at Manamadurai at 2.05am of Friday.
Railway Protection Force personnel were patrolling the section for security.
