The return of international rugby to Cork is a welcome boost to showcase the €3.2m redeveloped Irish Independent Park, according to the CEO of Munster Rugby Garrett Fitzgerald.

The venue, formerly named Musgrave Park, will host the clash between the Ireland Wolfhounds and England Saxons next January.

Work on the redevelopment, which will see the overall capacity of the ground increase to 9,500 through the construction of a new West Stand seating 3,500, is on schedule.

The Wolfhounds will take on the England Saxons on Friday, January 30 and the date was also confirmed this week for the first Guinness Pro12 clash at the redeveloped ground with Munster taking on Cardiff Blues there on Saturday, February 14, at 7.35pm.

CEO Fitzgerald said that it is a big boost to have an international match in Cork when the new-look stadium opens.

"It's nice for our fans that they get to experience international rugby within the province, and we also look forward to welcoming those from farther afield as we open a new chapter for Munster Rugby in Cork.

"We are delighted that the new Irish Independent Park will play host to Ireland Wolfhounds and England Saxons. After significant investment by Munster Rugby, we look forward to showcasing our new Cork facility which will provide an enhanced match-day experience for fans and players alike.

"The fixture announcement is testament to the wonderful work carried out by all involved within Munster Rugby and BAM contractors.

"Their efforts have ensured that the stadium redevelopment is on course to be completed on time and on budget," he said.

The CEO said that the new facility was coming on stream thanks to the assistance received from several quarters.

"We would like to thank Independent News and Media. The naming rights sponsorship agreement has assisted with the redevelopment works and has helped create permanency for Munster Rugby in Cork.

"Our thanks also to the Munster Rugby Supporters Club whose support has allowed us to upgrade the East Terrace, while the project was also brought about with the assistance of National Lottery funding," he added.
