Teenager stole tablet computer from her friend's toddler ; COURTS [Derby Evening Telegraph (England)]

(Derby Evening Telegraph (England) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) A TEENAGER has been sentenced for stealing a computer from the two-year-old child of a friend.

DET S2 E01-DET-When the toddler's mother heard about the incident, she said Shannon Garbett had betrayed her friendship. Garbett, 19, of Parker Street, Derby, admitted theft of the Android 10 tablet computer on August 30. She was ordered to pay Pounds 40 for a replacement and was given 14 weeks in custody, suspended for a year.

She will get help from probation officers in seeking work and must also pay Pounds 165 costs.

Peter Bettany, prosecuting, told Derby magistrates that the theft took place when Garbett visited the home of the friend, who was out at the time.

"The computer was being held by the two-year-old child and she took it," he said.

The incident was witnessed by a 15-year-old boy. Before leaving, Garbett said the child's mother had her bank card and added: "I want it back." Simon Stephens, in mitigation, said Garbett had visited the house with a man "who is entrenched in the criminal justice system". He refused to answer police questions and was never charged.

Garbett had shown remorse and needed help in stopping people "exploit her vulnerabilities", the court heard. Mr Stephens added: "She has acted out of character." Presiding magistrate Bernard Peters said the victims were vulnerable and told Garbett: "This is a breach of trust. You took advantage of them."
