Serie A: Rafael Benitez frustated by Napoli draw against Atalanta

Rafael Benitez cut a frustrated figure after watching his Napoli side fail to overcome Atalanta on Wednesday night.

German Denis opened the scoring for the Nerazzurri and, after Luca Cigarini equalised for Napoli, Gonzalo Higuain fluffed a chance to grab all three points by missing a penalty - his second spot-kick miss of the Serie A season - and it finished 1-1 in Bergamo.

If Benitez's side had triumphed at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia they would be a point clear of the pack in third place, a situation which is needling at the club's Spanish head coach.

He told Napoli's official website: "We deserved to win, we created lots of goalscoring opportunities. It's incredible that the win got away from us.

"The main thing is that we showed that we are on the right track and that we are improving. We created many many opportunities and conceded a goal from the only shot they took.

"But the boys did everything they could to get all three points.

"I get angry when I see my team playing so well and not getting all three points. It's happened quite a few times.

"But at the same time I have to think positively about the way we are playing and believe that the points will come.

"We're on the right path, we're controlling games, there are things we can improve on but we just need to press on with this same mindset."
