Boys from Clontarf Academies in Moree, Tamworth and Inverell met for a cricket carnival at Varley Oval that stretched into the evening as they played a round robin match under the lights.
Stepping up for the Inverell team was mayor Paul Harmon who cracked a few over the boundary for the boys.
Inverell defeated Moree to start with about 18 runs, but the boys out west bested the Oxley team by 25 runs putting Tamworth third on the ladder. It was all down to the last match, but Inverell showed their growing confidence in the game and took down the southern side by about 40 runs.
Clontarf Spirit Awards went to Tevi Tavo from Tamworth, Josh Williams from Inverell and very able batsman Bob Smith from Moree.
“The Spirit Awards (means) they’ve played really well, but they’ve played in the right spirit; encouraged others, and being their best and being positive,” said Inverell academy director Dave Koch.
“Just try to give everybody their shot, and try to be rally supportive. You know, there was a couple kids that couldn’t bowl properly, but the boys were great.” He thanked the council for their support and Cr Harmon for taking part onthe day.
The Inverell Clontarf cricket team will head to Armidale on November 21 to face all the Clontarf Academies in the state from Dubbo, Coonamble, Bourke, Wagga, Brewarrina, Tamworth and Moree and their host, Armidale.
