The slate should be offered for pre-order in November

As you might be aware, the creators of Ubuntu Linux have been hard at work trying to design a version of the OS that would play nice with phones and tablets.

And the first devices equipped with the OS should start shipping out to customers in early 2015 if everything goes on track.

Meizu and bq are the first manufacturers that have officially announced their intention of putting Ubuntu Touch on some of their smartphone products, but what if you’re more of a tablet person?

Well, in that case we have some good news to share with you because, according to Phoronix, a tablet running Ubuntu might be upon us soon.

Does the first Ubuntu Touch tablet arrives in time for Christmas?

How soon? According to sources familiar with the matter, the tablet could ship out by the end of the year. Pretty neat, huh?

Apparently, a tablet called the UT One is currently under development with the Demski Group and Mastermind Hardware and Logistic.

It’s possible that this tablet hasn’t been specifically built to run Ubuntu and would otherwise take advantage of Windows or Android. Nevertheless, it could still be one of the first to take advantage of the operating system.

The tablet is said to be made available for pre-order in November with hopes of shipping out in December.

UT One tablet spec shout out

At this point, you might be wondering what kind of specs you can hope for. Well, the UT One won’t blow your mind in the configuration department, but given the fact that this model is paving the way for Ubuntu slates, we shouldn't hold that against it.

The tablet takes advantage of a 10.1-inch IPS panel with 1280 x 800 pixel resolution and draws life from an Intel Atom Z3735D Bay Trail processor fitted with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage (expandable via the embedded microSD card slot).

Furthermore, the device is equipped with two cameras (2MP on the back and in front), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and stereo speakers.

The UT One relies on a pretty hefty battery of 7900 mAh battery that should offer up to 8 hours of run time. Last but not least, the tablet is 0.4-inch / 10 mm thick and weighs 1.4 lbs / 0.6 kg.

Tablets running Ubuntu are quite scarce at the moment. Back in May we brought you word of the Unity slate manufactured by Australian company Vixtel.

The device promises a Retina-type display and a quad-core processor and should offer an alternation between Ubuntu and Android, thus making it a dual-boot machine.

Even if the tablet has been announced for some time, the product is not yet available for pick-up. Hopefully, the same won't apply to the UT One.
