Principal District and Sessions Judge Uma M.G. has sentenced Hameed T. (33) from Someshwara village to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment after finding him guilty of possessing 1.02 kg of charas.
According to the charge sheet by the Costal Security Police, Hameed and Siddiq were arrested while they were attempting to sell charas to customers on the Someshwar beach on July 16, 2009. While the judge convicted Hameed on Tuesday, she acquitted Siddiq.
The judge directed Hameed to pay a fine of Rs. 2 lakh or undergo further imprisonment of one year in case he failed to pay the fine. Public Prosecutor Pushparaja Adhyantaya examined the witnesses in the court.
RescuedThree heads of cattle were rescued after the district police raided an alleged illegal slaughter house at Thannirpanta village, Belthangady taluk on Wednesday. On receiving a tip-off, teams from Punjalakatte and Uppinangady police stations raised the slaughter house where cattle, believed to be stolen, and 80 kg of beef were recovered.
Four persons, who have been accused of running the abattoir, are reportedly at large.
ArrestedThe Mulky police arrested Mohammed Yasir Sultan (25) for alleged illegal transportation of 50 grams of ganja near Kinnigoli on Wednesday.
The police said they arrested Sultan who was reportedly hid ganja packets inside the headlight of his vehicle.
ElectrocutedLatha (35), a resident of Pavoor Badigadde, was electrocuted after coming into contact with a live wire on Wednesday. The Konaje police said Latha got in touch with the wire while returning with her cattle.
Woman dies of bee stingA woman who was bitten by honey bees at Japti village on October 16, died at the Kasturba Hospital in Manipal on Wednesday. The police said Muttu Mogaveera, wife of Thimappa Mogaveera, was walking in her coconut plantation in Japti village, when a coconut branch having a honeycomb attached to it fell near her at around 2 p.m. on October 16. The bees from the comb stung her on face and body.
She was rushed to the Kasturba Hospital in Manipal, where she died on Wednesday. A case of unnatural death had been registered at the Kundapur police station, the police said.
