India : TELENOR skips 3G in INDIA, works on technology to provide 4G mobile broadband services with less spectrum than needed [TendersInfo (India)]

(TendersInfo (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Skipping 3G altogether in India, the Norwegian Telenor is developing technology that will allow it to provide super fast 4G mobile broadband services with less spectrum than presently required.

According to sources, the move may disrupt the plans of major competitors.

A senior official of Telenor, said the company is not there yet, but it believes that this might be possible in the future.

Once the technology has been prepared and its license is converted into a unified permit, Telenor's Indian arm Uninor will be able to provide 4G services without acquiring more spectrum than what it already has in the 1800 MHz band.

A unified permits enables the use of airwaves to offer any technology 2G, 3G or 4G.
