A longer relaxation of curfew on Wednesday saw Trilokpuri residents coming out to buy essential items. On Tuesday, people had stepped out of their homes for the first time in five days after curfew was lifted. The police on Tuesday used camera-mounted Unmanned Aerial Vehicles to search for weapons and made more arrests and seizures based on the footages.
The scenario relatively improved a day later but with a ‘jagran’ and ‘Muharram’ round the corner, people feared that disturbance might return.
Despite Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi’s claim that people were satisfied with the police response, residents of Blocks 20, 27 and 28 – some of the worst effected areas – said even now they were not sure if the police would act without bias or prejudice. The police on Wednesday made one more arrest in connection with the case, taking the total number to 69.
The police said that some of the bullets that caused injuries could have been fired by them but that could be ascertained only after forensic reports are obtained. A senior officer added that police had fired only in self defence. To restore harmony in the area, the police held a meeting with representatives of both the Hindu and the Muslim communities as well as members of the Aman (peace) committees at the Mayur Vihar police station on Wednesday. It was agreed upon that 15 members of the Muslim community would serve langar at the Jagran and as many Hindus would distribute refreshments while the Muharram processions passed through the area. It is learnt that peace and coordination committees would be formed in every block unlike the present system where there is one for the entire area.
