Camarillo, Calif., Oct. 29, 2014 – The Art program at CSU Channel Islands (CI) is pleased to present “Rick Gooding: Subterranea” in the Napa Hall Gallery, Monday, Nov. 10, through Friday, Dec. 5. The Los Angeles-based architect, known for his award-winning work for clients such as the Museum of Contemporary Art, J. Paul Getty Center, and LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes, will exhibit an intricate collection of drawings depicting an imaginary underground realm. A public reception with the artist will be held Thursday, Nov. 13, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Gooding’s "Subterranea" features more than 50 elaborate black-and-white pencil drawings portraying a world of winding tunnels and labyrinthine passageways. In an era of digital representation, Gooding’s show celebrates the precise and beautiful craft of manual drafting. He works without rulers or measuring devices and carefully constructs his drawings using the most basic architectural drafting tools: a straight edge, a 314 pencil, an eraser and erasing shield. His simple palette, eerie illustrations and subversive flips of optical logic draw comparisons to M.C. Escher, Giorgio De Chirico and Aldo Rossi. Though his imagery evokes architecture and maze-like buildings for human habitation, his spaces are ultimately inaccessible.

Gooding is a principal of the award-winning firm CHU+GOODING Architects in Los Angeles. His firm focuses on projects for arts-related and higher education clients, including organizations such as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, Hammer Museum, the J. Paul Getty Center, Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, Southern California Public Radio and LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes. He also has taught at various schools of architecture. Gooding received a Bachelor of Architecture from the Southern California Institute of Architecture in 1984 and a Master's in Architecture and Building Design from Columbia University in 1985.

His drawings have been included in The Architectural Review Folio, The Drawing Center Viewing Program, The Draftery, and on numerous other websites. More information about his work is available at www.rickgoodingart.com

The Napa Hall Art Gallery, the University’s premier art exhibition venue, is located on Ventura Street on the CI campus. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For additional information, contact the CI Art program at 805-437-2772 or email art@csuci.edu
