241 children under 10 have gone missing so far this year

Police form teams to trace the children, officers appointed to monitor each case.

Following the massive search operation and the discovery of 10-year-old Jhanvi Ahuja earlier this month, the Crime Branch of the Delhi Police has drawn up a list of children under the age of 10 years who were reported missing between January 1 and September 30 this year.
There are a total of 241 such cases, a police source said. The maximum number of cases — 22 — has been registered in Aman Vihar police station. Thirty-nine police stations have registered one case each.

“The Delhi Police has set up dedicated teams, comprising officers of the rank of ACPs and inspectors, to trace the children reported missing from the 13 police districts of Delhi. Each team will be assigned a cluster of two or three police stations and all cases will be regularly monitored,” a senior police officer said.

The officer said 11 children were reported missing from Narela, Shahbad Dairy and Neb Sarai and nine from Samaypur Badli and and Vijay Vihar.

Outer district has a cumulative count of 86 children, the highest in any district. Northeast and South districts have 27 and 26 cases, respectively, West district has 23 cases, Northwest and Southwest each has 14, Southeast has 13, East has 10, Central has nine, Crime and Railways has eight, North and New Delhi have five each and IGI airport has one case.

Of these, five children were reported missing from the high security New Delhi district.

Festive offer

This list excludes children aged between 10 and 18, police said. If these cases are counted, then it could drastically up the numbers.
Police said the priority was to search and find those missing under the age of 10 since these children are the most vulnerable and could have become victims of kidnapping or child-trafficking.

Police said those children in the higher age group, who were reported missing by their parents, might have voluntarily left home or eloped. For these cases a different approach in investigation was needed, the officer said.
