Go-ahead given to demolish flower market
Mapusa: The MMC has also given its approval for the demolition of the existing flower market and constructing a new two-storey building to accommodate all the vendors from the present market. Vendors from the flower market had opposed the demolition claiming that the construction of the new market is part of a plan to provide a back-door entry to outsiders.
According to the merchants and vendors of the flower market, MMC chairperson Sandip Falari had assured them that no decision regarding the flower market would be taken without consulting the stakeholders.
Till date, the exercise has not taken place. In the revised master plan document some objections raised have been accepted, whereas the proposal to reconstruct the flower market building still persists in the said
revision.
“This is despite the consistent and genuine objections raised by the stakeholders. The revised master plan which has been unanimously passed by the MMC is a farce and an attempt to pull wool over the eyes of the merchants and vendors in particular and the public in general,” said Assis Cardozo, a shop owner from the market, on behalf of the vendors.
Mapusa flower market bachao samiti led by Shripad Savant, Assis Cardozo and Subrai Chodankar said that they are unanimous in objecting to this deviously planned destruction of a heritage and strong structure thereby destroying the livelihoods of hundreds of people.
