Some 35,000 NYPD officers will be given with smartphones that allow officers to scan suspects' fingerprints, search databases and view wanted posters. Meanwhile, 6,000 police vehicles will have with Panasonic "Toughpad" tablets that have similar functionality. While the Windows phone shown as an example by de Blasio doesn't have a separate fingerprint scanner, leaked documentation for the phone's 8.1 SDK mentioned support for fingerprint readers.
