NYPD to be equipped with mobile biometric devices [Emirates News Agency (WAM) (United Arab Emirates)]

(Emirates News Agency (WAM) (United Arab Emirates) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) New York Police Department officers and vehicles are to be given mobile fingerprint scanners as part of a $160 million plan to accelerate the processing of suspects, the city's mayor has revealed. Some 35,000 NYPD officers will be given with smartphones that allow officers to scan suspects' fingerprints, search databases and view wanted posters. Meanwhile, 6,000 police vehicles will have with Panasonic "Toughpad" tablets that have similar functionality.

You can literally, with this technology, take a fingerprint on a street corner, Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a news conference. "It's going to allow us to do more summonses and fewer arrests where appropriate. It's going to simplify and make more efficient the work that people in law enforcement do," he added. Sources told the New York Post that the smartphones and tablets will be connected to Verizon's high-speed wireless network. While the Windows phone shown as an example by de Blasio doesn't have a separate fingerprint scanner, leaked documentation for the phone's 8.1 SDK mentioned support for fingerprint readers. Under the Credential required heading, code points to a choice between entering your password for access or scanning an enrolled finger on the fingerprint reader.
