LABUAN: Eight Special Olympics athletes returned home triumphantly from Macau after securing nine gold, six silver and two bronze medals, out of the 16 gold, 14 silver and 13 bronze medals won by Malaysia. This put Malaysia in fourth place of the total medal tally at the 21st Inter Cities Invitational Games in the former Portuguese enclave.

Their arrival was eagerly awaited by parents and families of the athletes led by Head of Malaysian Delegation Joceline Yeo, last Sunday.

"Our participation was made possible by the sponsorship of air tickets by Maybank," said Joceline, an activist and advocate of special children.

She described the trip as fruitful, not only in terms of performance, but also an invaluable experience in broadening their horizon.

They took time off sightseeing historical sites and the Senado Square.

Due to their disabilities, they are a bit shy and withdrawn. Taking part in the Games had opened them to be more interactive, she said.

The athletes were under the Special Education Integrated Programme (PPKI) from SK Bukit Kalam, SMK Mutiara and SMK Lajau.

In the run-up to the Games they underwent training at the Labuan Sports Complex two to three times a week.

Besides Labuan, Sandakan, Lahad Datu and Kuching represented Malaysia, where they participated in 50 metres, 100 metres, 200 metres, 400 metres, 4x100 metres relay, shot putt and long jump. – Cheang Poh Hwa
