LPG subsidy transfer has been a bumpy ride till now

October 28, 2014 11:25 pm | Updated May 23, 2016 06:53 pm IST - HYDERABAD:

The LPG-Aadhaar card link up for Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme had brought in unforeseen problems for the administration as well as for the LPG gas dealers. To begin with, when the government launched the scheme making it mandatory for everyone to link their Aadhaar card to bank accounts to get the LPG subsidy refunded, many did not have an Aadhaar card. This triggered a mad rush to apply and procure an Aadhaar card.

Those already in possession of the card complained that linking Aadhaar to their bank account was taking time. LPG dealers had to bear the brunt of their customers who complained that they had not received their subsidy amount in their bank accounts for mon-ths. There came a point when lower middle class customers refused to take LPG cylinders as they were paying around Rs.1,200 with-out an assurance of receiving the subsidy.

The authorities also had to keep an eye out for and weed multiple and bogus cards. In districts, people had a tough time as there were not enough banks in a particular area and they had to travel long distances to withdraw the subsidy amount.
