CHENNAI: The Northern Railway will set up a solar power plant at Shri Mata Vaishno Katra railway station in Jammu and Kashmir with an investment of Rs 8.52 crore. Work for the project began on Tuesday.
The solar power plant would generate 14.6 lakh units per annum, a statement from the Press Information Bureau said.
The accrued benefit will be the reduction of 10,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per annum and a saving of Rs 1 crore per annum on energy bills for the Railways.

The plant will be commissioned in a three phased-progamme with installation of a 300 kilowatt (KW) system on platforms 2 and 3 by December 2014, a 500KW system on platform No 1 by January 2015 and a 200KW system on the roof of the station building by February 2015.
Rajasthan Electronics and Instruments Ltd, Jaipur, will execute the project.
