Mozambique Prepares to Harness Vast Gas Reserves

LONDON (Finacial Times) - Nuno Remane barely conceals his excitement as he points to designs for “Palma, the City of Gas”. Covering 18,000 hectares and projected to house 250,000 people, the planned conurbation will be home to a giant liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant and a range of energy-intensive industries, plus golf courses, shopping malls and hotels.
What sounds like a grandiose mega-project in the deserts of the oil-rich Gulf is in fact the blueprint for a remote coastal area of Mozambique, one of Africa’s poorest countries.
"This [gas] will change our story,” says Mr Remane, chief executive of Tracus, the architect behind the master plan. "The poor cousin of the Portuguese-speaking countries will turn into a little master – if we guide this project properly.”
The plan highlights the ambitions of the southern African nation as it prepares to harness vast gas reserves that have the potential to transform it into one of the world’s top LNG exporters.
