Minor girl’s body found in dumpster in Mumbai

The Shivaji Nagar police have registered an FIR of kidnapping, murder and rape against unknown persons.

A 14-year-old girl, who went missing on Saturday, was found murdered in a dumpster close to her Shivaji Nagar residence in the early hours of Sunday. The Shivaji Nagar police suspect that she was sexually exploited.

Police said the victim, who stayed with her parents and sister in Shivaji Nagar, Govandi, was last seen by her mother around 6 pm on Saturday outside her house, after which she went missing. After looking for her in the locality and nearby areas, the victim’s mother approached the police at around 12.30 am on Sunday. Around four hours later, her body was found in a dumpster nearly 500 metres from her residence.

“A cloth was tied tightly around the victim’s neck. Death seems to have been due to strangulation,” said DCP (Zone VI) Sangramsinh Nishandar.

The Shivaji Nagar police have registered an FIR of kidnapping, murder and rape against unknown persons. Police said the section for kidnapping was included in the FIR as the victim was a minor, and that the section for rape had been included as the motive behind her abduction and murder ‘seems to have been sexual in nature’.

“The victim was only clad in her top, and was wearing nothing from the waist downwards, which had led us to suspect sexual assault, which could be the motive behind her killing,” said Nishandar.

Festive offer

The police have sent the body to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar and are awaiting the post-mortem report, which will confirm or eliminate the possibility of sexual assault.
