Firecrackers may have sparked the major fire that broke out in the military godowns at Mazagaon on Saturday night, believe fire department officials. It took the fire department around three hours to douse the grade two fire that gutted a godown and partially damaged another. “We doused the fire around 2 am on Sunday and began the cooling operations. A major portion of the godown was destroyed by the fire.

We are investigating the matter and will know more in two-three days,” said SH Nesarikar, deputy chief fire officer. No loss of life was reported.

“We believe flying firecrackers could have caused the fire but we need to investigate further. It is a big complex and blocks three and five were affected by the fire. While block three that houses household commodities was gutted, block five that held alcohol was partially damaged,” he said. The fire brigade received a call around 10.45 pm. Around eight fire engines and six water tankers were pressed into service. “The godown belongs to the Ministry of Defence and they will have to give us details on the extent of damage, while we will continue our investigation,” Nesarikar added.
