Marines injured in Humvee crash on Interstate 5

Share

Two Marines in their 20s were injured Sunday morning in a Humvee accident that closed the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton, officials said.

The Marine who was driving the Humvee was taken by ambulance to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla with moderate injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The Marine who was a passenger was airlifted to the same hospital with major injuries.

The driver apparently lost control of the Humvee when it struck the rear of a big rig. The Humvee careened up an embankment on the right shoulder of the freeway and then came back down, crossing four lanes of traffic before smashing into the center divider, the CHP said.

The 45-year-old driver of the big rig was not injured, the CHP said.

The incident occurred in the Aliso Creek area about 6 miles north of Camp Pendleton.

Within an hour of the 10 a.m. accident all but one southbound lane had been reopened. The incident is under investigation.

There is no indication that drugs or alcohol were involved, the CHP said.
