MADURAI: Madurai and Sivaganga district administrations on Sunday announced dry days ahead of the Thevar guru puja and Marudhu brothers' guru puja.
The Marudhu brothers' guru puja is to be observed in Sivaganga district on Monday while the Thevar guru puja will be held in Ramanathapuram district on October 30.
The Madurai district administration has announced four dry days, from Monday to Thursday. A Madurai district official said all liquor shops would be closed on Sunday evening and they would remain closed till Friday morning.
In Sivaganga, it will be only a one-day dry day. All the liquor shops will remain closed on Monday.
Officials said this was the first they were announcing four days of dry days in Madurai in connection with the guru pujas. This measure was taken to avert any untoward incidents during the celebrations.
The dry days were announced at the last minute to prevent people from stocking liquors. Last year, as dry days were announced very early, people stocked liquors.
