We paused to reflect on the life and work of Gough Whitlam this week.

Whitlam was either a towering visionary who shaped modern Australia or the now famous Greg Sheridan view, the worst Prime Minister in Australian history.

Many of his detractors point to the economic record as a central plank in their critique.

But do we take a too limited view of what constitutes economic benefit? Do we have a broad enough discussion of economic performance and consequence?
