Bohemians 2-1 Derry City

Manager Owen Heary left Bohemians after they signed off their Premier Division campaign with a 2-1 win over Derry City at Dalymount Park.

After trailing to Mark Timlin’s strike, the home side were ahead by half-time thanks to goals from Dinny Corcoran and Jason Byrne.

Derry took the lead on 13 minutes after Joshua Tracey raced from left to right before feeding Timlin who cut inside and was given too much room by Jack Memery and the winger’s drive flew past Bohs 'keeper Dean Delany.

Despite falling behind, the home side were superior and they levelled on 30 minutes when Corcoran beat the offside trap to control Keith Buckley’s long ball, before side-footing home past Derry goalkeeper Gerard Doherty.

Bohs then took the lead on 45 minutes through the penalty spot after Steven Beattie was brought down by Doherty just inside the box and that man Byrne made no mistake with the resulting spot-kick.

The visitors, in truth, never looked like getting back into the game after the break. In fact it was Bohs who had chances to increase their lead but Byrne and Corcoran were denied by Doherty.

Derry finished the game with ten men after substitute Ryan McBride was taken off as a precaution after he clashed with Byrne.

In stoppage time Bohs had another chance to increase their lead when Corcoran was brought down inside the box by Shane McEleney, referee Andrew Mullally pointed to the spot, but after dusting himself down the big striker side-footed wide.

Right at the death Byrne was given a standing ovation as he was substituted in the closing stages.

In a statement released after the game, Bohs thanked Heary, who is set to take over at Sligo Rovers.

“We have been lucky and privileged to have a person of the calibre and qualities of Owen Heary with us,” said club president Matt Devaney

“Over eight seasons with Bohemians Owen Heary has been an exemplary leader in many roles, as captain, as coach to youth teams, as assistant manager, and most recently as manager.

“In this season he and his squad achieved much more than was expected of them in the league, the FAI Cup and the league cup.

“Owen has built a strong team spirit in the squad, acting as an inspiration in particular to younger players. He has left an indelible mark on Bohemians.”
