Five people including two children were killed yesterday when Taliban militants opened fire on a van in eastern Afghanistan, police said.

“The insurgents targeted a minivan heading towards Jalalabad city in the Khogyani district this morning,” said Hazrat Hussain Mashreqiwal, police spokesman for Nangarhar province.

Two other passengers were injured, he said.

Nangarhar, just across the border from Pakistan’s tribal regions, is considered one of the Taliban’s safe havens in the area.
