Gareth Maybin fails to retain Tour card after missing cut

Gareth Maybin has failed to retain his European Tour card after a second round of one-over-par 73 saw him miss the cut by one shot at the Perth International.

The Ballyclare man ended day two on level par after a round which included three birdies and four bogeys.

Maybin needed to finish in the top seven in Australia to have any chance of keeping his Tour place so will now take part in the European Tour School.

Peter Whiteford leads on 12 under, one ahead of Denmark's Thorbjorn Olesen.

Damien McGrane is tied for 18th on four under after successive rounds of 70, while Kevin Phelan is one shot worse off thanks to a 69.

Peter Lawrie is eight over after carding a 77 so is also certain to have to make a trip to the tour school.

Lawrie is currently 174th in the Race to Dubai after a second successive poor season and went into this week's event needing a win to hold on to his card.

Maybin went into this week's event 122nd in the Race to Dubai - some £25,000 off the 111th spot that would have ensured safety.

McGrane has already secured his tour card for next season as he is currently 94th in the order of merit, but Phelan, third at last week's Hong Kong Open, is 130th in the standings and only a top-three finish is likely to be enough for him to retain his card.
