Free wi-fi on city buses again

In a month’s time, passengers will have access to wi-fi connection free of cost on city buses.

The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is planning to launch the service in 200 air-conditioned buses on routes like Kempegowda International Airport and IT corridors like ITPB and Electronic City.
A BMTC official said at present wi-fi service is being installed in 50 buses and by December, it will be provided in all 200 buses. Managing director of the BMTC Ekroop Caur said, “The move will help office goers in a big way. The corporation is not charging any extra money for the service other than the bus fare.” The internet access will be available for 30 minutes and if passengers want to continue they need to log in again.

In 2010, internet access was provided on a pilot basis on Vayu Vajra buses plying between ITPB and the international airport. However, the initiative only made headlines and never took off.
