ActivePost junior cricketers have a go with BLACKCAPS heroes

Hamilton’s youngest cricketers will take their talent to the pitch this long weekend for the ANZ One Day International (ODI) versus South Africa at Seddon Park on Monday.

As a part of New Zealand Post’s ActivePost National Schools Programme, 200 Waikato kids will be given an opportunity to show their cricketing heroes and communities their sporting skills, playing mini games of cricket between innings.

The ActivePost programme is about promoting participation in junior sport through fun and engaging training sessions and events that involve the community, families, schools and clubs.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to raise the profile of junior cricket and to show off the young talent we have coming through from both the Hamilton and Waikato Valley regions,” says CEO of Northern Districts Cricket, Peter Roach.

New Zealand Post’s ActivePost junior cricketers were a welcome addition to the first ANZ ODI at the revamped Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on Tuesday.

“We know children learn best when they’re having a good time,” says New Zealand Post’s Group Brand and Community Investment Manager Nicola Airey.

“The opportunity to get involved at an event like the BLACKCAPS match on Monday will hopefully inspire the kids to stay involved with cricket and keep active in their communities.”

BLACKCAPS and Northern Knights player Trent Boult says his love for the sport began with school and club cricket.

“It’s really important that there are strong programmes in place, like ActivePost Have-a-Go Cricket and ActivePost Kiwi Cricket, for kids to develop their skills and passion for the game.

“Being able to get out on the park between innings is an exciting opportunity for these young Waikato cricketers. I’m looking forward to seeing them out there,” Boult says.

The ANZ ODI in Hamilton will be the final in the series of three matches against South Africa.
