Police meet to discuss crime wave

KINGSTON, Jamaica:

Members of the Police High Command met this morning and there are indications that the spate of murders reported across several parishes in the past two weeks was among a range of issues that were discussed.



Deputy Commissioner Glenmore Hinds told The Gleaner/Power 106 News Centre this morning that while it was a regularly scheduled meeting, the recent incidents of blood-letting was sure to come up for discussion.



At the end of the meeting, the police are expected to announce measures to tackle the violence, which has left at least 13 persons dead in three triple murders and one quadruple killing in the last two weeks.



The latest incident occurred last night when gunmen reportedly opened fire on a group of persons outside a bar along St Johns Road in the east Kingston community of Rockfort last night.



Deputy Superintendent Hornet Williams, who is attached to the East Kingston Police Division, confirmed that three persons were killed and four others are nursing gunshot wounds.



Williams says shortly after, gunmen from a rival gang went to the nearby Hildene Avenue area and opened fire on a group of residents injuring two persons in what is believed to be a reprisal attack.



DSP Williams says three men, including one who the police listed as a person of interest, are now in custody and he believes they can assist investigators.



He blamed the incident on a feud between rival gangs in the area, but appealed to residents to remain calm.



He was speaking earlier on the Power 106 call in programme Cliff Hughes online
