Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Thursday urged the External Affairs Ministry to rush aid to nurses who are stranded in strife-torn Libya city of Benghazi.

In a letter to External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Chief Minister Chandy said nurses have been struggling in Benghazi even without food. Chandy handed over the details of 18 nurses who have been stranded in Benghazi. They should be brought to Malta via ship and flown to India, said Chandy.

The Chief Minister also asked to take steps for the release of five Indian fishermen, including a person from Kerala, who have been languishing in the custody of Iran government. The five fishermen, four of them from Tamil Nadu, were caught by Iranian forces on September 22 while engaged in deep sea fishing. Necessary directions should be given to the Indian Embassy officials in Iran to ensure speedy release of these fishermen from the custody of Iran government, said Chandy.
