WASHINGTON, October 23 (RIA Novosti) – Washington and Moscow should have more dialogue, and talk to each other in a civilized way, Former US Ambassador to Ukraine told RIA Novosti Thursday.

"I think there needs to be considerably more discussion between Americans and Russians," William Miller said, adding that the two countries have lost contact with each other as well as understanding of the greatness of our two societies.

Miller, who served as the US Ambassador to Ukraine from 1993 to 1998, underlined that it's not very useful to have war as means of settling differences, and the countries have to talk to each other in a civilized way.

"I think we should move more in the direction of the Swan Lake than war," he stressed. "I think they have to get along. The state of war can't continue."

The former ambassador added that Russia has to give back Crimea back to Ukraine and stop interfering in internal politics of another nation.

US Secretary of State John Kerry said Wednesday that the United States does not seek confrontation with Moscow and wants to solve international problems together, but Russia should take Western concerns over its role in the Ukrainian conflict seriously. During the meeting with German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Kerry accused Moscow of violating Ukraine's sovereignty by reunifying with Crimea and allegedly supporting independence forces.

Relations between Russia and the West deteriorated following Crimea's reunification with Russia in March. Accusing Moscow of interfering in Ukraine's internal affairs, the West introduced several waves of anti-Russian economic sanctions. Moscow denied any involvement in the Ukrainian crisis, branding the sanctions as illegal and introduced a one-year ban on certain food product imports from the countries that imposed the restrictions.
