14-yr-old girl from Kurla flees after tiff with father, traced to a shelter in Chennai

A 14-year-old girl from Kurla, who went missing on October 9 and was feared kidnapped, has been traced to a shelter in Chennai. Investigations revealed the girl had run away from home after being slapped by her father, and boarded a Chennai-bound train from the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus.

On realising that the girl was travelling ticketless and alone, fellow passengers questioned her, and handed her to a station master at Chennai Railway Station, who alerted the cops and got her admitted to a shelter, officers from V B Nagar Police Station in Kurla said.

The girl resides with her parents in the shanties near Kohinoor Hospital, and her father, an autorickshaw driver, was convinced that she had been kidnapped. For the past several days, he along with his relatives would sit on a protest outside the police station alleging inaction.

Said Inspector Raut from V B Nagar Police Station, “The parents had no idea their girl had run away. We had registered a case of kidnapping as per the rules. Fortunately, the Chennai shelter authorities contacted the girl’s relatives in Mumbai a couple of days ago, and that’s how we managed to trace her. Our officers have left for Chennai and she should be reunited with her family today (Thursday),” Raut said. According to police, it was “sheer good fortune” that the girl was unharmed.

“It seems she left home after being slapped by her father and boarded a train at the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus. Fortunately, fellow passengers realised she had run away from home and looked after her during the journey, and also ensured she was handed over to the station master in Chennai,” a V B Nagar cop said.
