AFMC gets new dean

Maj Gen M D Venkatesh, an expert in the field of Otolaryngology, has been appointed dean and deputy commandant of the prestigious Armed Forces Medical College, Pune.

PUNE: Maj Gen M D Venkatesh, an expert in the field of Otolaryngology, has been appointed dean and deputy commandant of the prestigious Armed Forces Medical College, Pune. He replaces Maj Gen Velu Nair, who has been appointed senior consultant (medicine) in the office of director general of armed forces medical services in Delhi.
Venkatesh is a graduate of Government Medical College, Mysore.
He was commissioned into the Indian Army in August 1979. He obtained MS (ENT) from Bombay University in 1986 and is trained in cochlear implant and neurotology. He is a recognized postgraduate teacher and examiner in leading institutions including Savitribai Phule Pune University; Maharashtra University of Health Science among others.
He has held several prestigious appointments including professor and head, department of ENT and Head and Neck Surgery at AFMC, Commandant, Military Hospital, Namkum, Deputy Director General (Planning and Training) and Additional Director General, Armed Forces Medical Services (Medical Research, Health and Training), prior to assuming the present charge. He was awarded Chief of Army Staff commendation cards in 2001 and 2007 and Vishist Seva Medal in 2013 for his distinguished services.
