Ex-Shark Dan Boyle puts Bay Area home up for rent

Former San Jose Sharks defenseman Dan Boyle, now with the New York Rangers, has put his home in Monte Sereno up for rent at $15,000 a month. Alternatively, the property now lists for sale at $5.498 million.

Built in 2007, the Country English-style residence, with a slate roof and stone accents, is set on a one-acre knoll above Los Gatos with city and valley views. The landscaped grounds include a pool and spa, an outdoor kitchen, a pool house/gym and a four-car garage.

Clad in hardwood and hand-carved limestone, the two-story floor plan includes a a country kitchen, a home theater, an office/study and a wine cellar. In the billiards room, a large shark mount rests above the fireplace mantel.

In all, the home has five bedrooms, including a pair of master retreats, and six bathrooms in more than 5,700 square feet.

Boyle put the property on the market in late May following an announcement by Sharks General Manager Doug Wilson that the impending free agent would not be offered a contract for the 2014-15 season. The 38-year-old agreed to a two-year, $9-million contract with the Rangers at the start of the free-agency period in July.

The two-time all-star, now in his 17th season, previously played for the Florida Panthers and the Tampa Bay Lightning, winning a Stanley Cup championship with the latter in 2004. He is currently sidelined with a broken hand.

Boyle purchased the home in 2009 for $4 million, public records show. Janee Medved of Claremont is the listing agent.
