Policemen’s sacrifices in the line of duty were observed at the Police Commemoration Day here on Tuesday.
District police officials paid a floral tribute to nearly 659 policemen who lost their lives in the past one year. The police flag was lowered and a silent prayer was held at the City Reserve Police ground.
A police patrol in Ladakh was ambushed by Chinese forces on this day in 1959 and ten policemen were killed and nine captured. Since then, this day marks the sacrifices of the men in khaki, said Mangalore City Commissioner R. Hitendra.
Calling it a moral duty to honour policemen, who often maintain law and order with scant regard for their personal safety, Uma M.G., District and Sessions Judge, said: “We must not only salute policemen for their work but also ensure they get monetary support.”
‘Care of policemen’In Udupi, S.S. Pattanashetti, Deputy Commissioner, said that policemen gave up their lives to protect the society and the country. He was speaking at a function organised by the District Police here. Mr. Pattanashetti said that it was the society’s responsibility to take care of the families of those policemen who had given their lives in the line of duty.
He added that the police was responsible for the comfortable life of people in the country. They dealt with all kinds of cases including murder, extortion and petty crimes, he said.
