Nimse, Khaire lose poll deposits

The deposit of a candidate is lost if the number of votes polled for him/her is less than one-sixth of the total valid votes in the constituency.In all, 142 candidates lost their deposits in Nashik district.

NASHIK: Bigwigs like Nitin Bhosale (former MNS MLA), Shahu Khaire from the Congress, Uddhav Nimse (former chairman of the Nashik Municipal Corporation's standing committee), Dashrath Patil (former mayor) and Shivaji Chumbhale of the NCP, who ranked second or third, lost their deposits as they failed to get at least one-sixth of the total votes polled in their assembly constituencies in Nashik city.

The deposit of a candidate is lost if the number of votes polled for him/her is less than one-sixth of the total valid votes in the constituency. In all, 142 candidates lost their deposits in Nashik district. While the deposit amount for candidates from Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes was Rs 5,000, deposits for unreserved candidates was Rs 10,000. The total deposit collected was Rs 11 lakh, officials said.
Shahu Khaire, along with Ajay Boraste of the Shiv Sena (24,549 votes) and Vinayak Khaire of the NCP (7,095 votes) lost their deposits in the Nashik Central assembly constituency, which the BJP's Devayani Pharande had won. With the constituency having 16,07,10 valid votes, the cut-off to save deposits stood at 26,785.
Similarly, Uddhav Nimse (19,509 votes), Devidas Pingale of the NCP (13,005 votes) and Ramesh Dhongade of the MNS (12,488 votes), contesting in the Nashik East constituency, lost their deposits. Balasaheb Sanap of the BJP won the seat. Since there were 1,67,148 valid votes, the cut-off was 27,858 votes.
In Nashik West, Shivaji Chumbhale of the NCP (30,236 votes), Dashrath Patil of the Congress (21,981 votes), D L Karad of the CPI(M) (16,870 votes) and former MLA Nitin Bhosale of the MNS (8,712 votes) lost their deposits. The total number of valid votes in the constituency was 1,97,820; of which the candidates had to have more than 32,970 votes to save their deposits.
