Central Railway authorities on Tuesday sent out a list of works, totaling more than Rs 400 crore, to the railway board, the final sanctioning body, to add muscle to the over-burdened and aging transportation network. The list of works was approved by CR general manager SK Sood after he chaired the Works Programme Meeting at CST on Tuesday.

Among the important works is the Rs71-crore plan to make all long-distance platforms of CST terminus capable of running longer 24 coach trains. This would mean that passengers would get more seats on trains that will leave CST.

Another project, worth about Rs125 crore, involves electrification of the Jasal-JNPT Port line and the Panvel-Pen-Thal line which will allow CR to save on diesel bills and also speed up freight transportation.

A major chunk of the money – Rs 130 crore – have been proposed to overhaul safety works like rehabilitation of bridges, signal and telecommunication equipment and other amenities. A sum of Rs 10 crore has been sought from the railway board for the installation of digital equipment between Thane and Kalyan to ensure running of trains even during heavy monsoonal flooding.

CR's plans include spending Rs 52 crore to build road-overbridges to replace level crossing gates at several places between CST and Roha and Rs 15 crore to replace foot-overbridges at Asangaon, Diva, Mumbra, Bhandup, Masjid, Sewri and Dadar stations.

The meeting also came to a conclusion that any additional halt for trains will cost around Rs 18 crore and another Rs 40 crore to deploy additional rakes to maintain present level of services.

"The emphasis of these entire gamut of works is safety. The general manager has approved these works and it has now been forwarded to the railway board for final approval," said Narendra Patil, chief spokesperson, CR.
