In order to boost sales in a slower period post Diwali, budget carrier SpiceJet and full service carrier Jet Airways on Tuesday announced discounts on fares for travel between November 1 to December 15.

The fares, however, will depend on flight and date of travel, the airline said in a release. Tickets can be booked between October 21 to October 26 for travel between the periods mentioned above. The sale applies for economy class travel in Jet Airways and for the entire domestic network of SpiceJet and Jet.

Taking a cue, airlines like IndiGo, Air India too are offering discounted fares on certain routes during the same travel period. Discounts are valid for popular sectors such as Goa, Bangalore, Chennai, Kochi.

With this offer we are giving our customers one more chance to grab great deals at prices that are often lower than train fares in the six-week window between the travel peaks of Diwali and Christmas/New Years," said Kaneswaran Avili, chief commercial officer, SpiceJet in a statement.

This year has seen most airlines offering discounted fares with competition getting intensified with the entry of new players. Talking about the discount strategy, Sanjiv Kapoor, chief operating officer, SpiceJet said in a statement, "These sales have helped the airlines fill empty seats, allowed more Indians to travel by air than ever before, and more often than before, and have helped air travel grow significantly year-over-year benefiting the entire travel ecosystem and larger economy."

Sharat Dhall, president, Yatra.com – an online travel agency, said, "The year started with a bang with offers galore from all airlines and we have seen the market respond very positively to these offers. We definitely anticipate other major airlines responding to the sale shortly and expect a significant increase in bookings over the next few days as travellers look to benefit from these discounted fares."

"SpiceJet announced its Diwali Dhamaka sale with fares starting Rs 899 while AirAsia sale started earlier this week with fares at Rs 999. These sales aim at encouraging travel in the months of November and early December, which is a relatively leaner period in an otherwise peak season for travel," said Ranjeet Oak, senior vice president, MakeMyTrip – another online travel agency.
