CHANDIGARH: It certainly is a happy and prosperous Diwali for the jewelers in city. On the auspicious occasion of Dhanteras, the jewellery industry in Tricity saw a business of approximately Rs 120 crore, out of which nearly Rs 100 crore was in Chandigarh alone, claimed the jewellers.
According to the jewelers, the sale was higher than the last year three years with gold prices being low at Rs 26,300.
This year, the sale was up by nearly 60%.
Anil Talwar, co-chairman of gem and jewellery committee, FICCI, said, "The response has been tremendous. In Chandigarh alone, jewellery worth Rs 100 crore was sold whereas the Tricity as a whole has done a business of Rs 120 crore."
Tarun Singla, a city-based jeweller, said, "The sale has gone up by 60%. There are nearly 500 jewellers in tricity and all have seen a good footfall."
With jewellers giving various offers and discounts on the occasion of Dhanteras, buyers had a lot of options to choose from. The gold shops in Tricity wore a festive look with shoppers, mainly women, flocking all through the day. While many bought jewellery for upcoming weddings, others were just looking to add to their jewellery collection.
Mehak Singh, a resident of Sector 21, spent Rs 2 lakh on buying silver and gold jewellery at a Sector 22 store. "My son's getting wedded next month and we were waiting for Dhanteras to pick jewellery from the store. We had placed the order a month in advance," she said.

On the other hand, Sheffali Garg, a resident of Sector 16, shopped just because the day was auspicious. "I like to wear light gold and diamond jewellery, so, I shop every Dhanteras. This year, I have bought a cocktail ring along with a sleek diamond bracelet," she shared.
This year, men also motivated their women to shop, but from the investment point of view. "Every woman likes gold, but it is not every time that gold is available at such a low price. Therefore, it was a good day to invest in gold," said Mahesh Duttani, a city-based businessman.
Residents who did not shop for gold bought silver serving sets, glasses, mugs, etc. Nearly 600 cars were delivered on Dhanteras in city. Many also shopped for utensils.
