How does Rob Corddry feel about entering into the front lines of the streaming content game with the new Vimeo series Wedlock?
“I choose a lot of front lines,” he says in this episode of Off the Cuff, “only because the main front line won’t have me.” Of course we know better after having watched Corddry kill it comedically for years now, first as a correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, where he got his tv chops watching the likes of Stephen Colbert and Steve Carrell. When people ask Corddry for advice on how to establish a character like the one he did for The Daily Show he tells them, “I just imitated Stephen Colbert until I got comfortable with whatever my thing was. So do that.”

Since then Corddry has brought his own memorable characters to projects like Childrens Hospital (which he co-writes – preferably, he tells us, on a train); the teen zombie romance Warm Bodies; his good friend Lake Bell‘s In A World; and, of course, Hot Tub Time Machine, whose sequel will premiere next February (pushed back from its original Christmas release date) – but without John Cusack this time around.
“He was probably like, ‘Oh man. What? This was something I was doing as a joke!'” Corddry teases about Cusask opting out of the sequel.
For now Corddry’s fans can have fun watching him melt down in Wedlock, in which he plays a couples therapist who is hired by two off-their-rocker best friends (played by Mark Duplass and Jennifer Lafleur) who want to force their platonic friendship into romantic love. Convinced Corddry’s shrink is just the man for the job, they drive him to a level of madness not seen since Inspector Clouseau sent Chief Inspector Dreyfus into the loony bin in the Pink Panther movies (a comparison Corddry is flattered by).
After he lists all the odd jobs he was (purposefully) fired from before becoming a working actor (and even since then – including, he tells us, the Sandra Bullock/Melissa McCarthy buddy flick The Heat), Corddry is wise to stay on the front lines of comedy as long as they will have him.
