BANGALORE: A 21-year-old youth was arrested for cheating a Chennai-based MBBS aspirant of Rs 30 lakh by claiming to be an agent of medical colleges and promising him a seat.
Police have recovered Rs 9 lakh from Mrigank Kumar alias Vikas alias Vicky, a Lavelle Road resident. His three associates are missing.
DCP (Central) Sandeep Patil said Murali from Chennai had approached Cubbon Park police stating that four persons - Mrigank, Deepak Singh from Sanjaynagar; Rahul Raj from Delhi; Nihal and Sandip Sidana from Mumbai - had taken Rs 30 lakh from him.
They had promised him a seat in a prestigious medical college in the city. Mrigank turned evasive over the seat issue after collecting the money from Murali.
Police found Mirgank had rented out a posh office on Vittal Mallya Road on an hourly basis and opened a bank account in the name of the chairman of a medical college.
Murali gave the entire Rs 30 lakh through a demand draft, which was later encashed by Mrigank through the fake bank account. Police have seized CCTV footage from Mrigank's office and also documents pertaining to his fake accounts.
A senior police officer said Mrigank will be questioned to see if he has any connection with the recent ComedK scam.
