Online giant's 1,000 extra jobs for Xmas [South Wales Evening Post (Wales)]

(South Wales Evening Post (Wales) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) MORE than 1,000 seasonal jobs are on their way to Swansea Bay to boost the Amazon workforce in the run-up to Christmas.

It is the second fillip for the Jersey Marine site in a matter of days following last week's announcement that it will also be creating an unspecified number of permanent positions.

The online retail giant will be hiring 1,000 people on a permanent basis across its network of eight UK fulfilment centres, including the Jersey Marine base, and its customer service centre in Edinburgh.

And today it said that the Swansea Bay site would also benefit from over 1,000 seasonal jobs as part of a 13,000 temporary boost to its workforce.

"Last year, on the busiest day in the run up to Christmas, our customers ordered 4.1 million items - that's about 47 items ordered per second," said John Tagawa, director of UK operations.

The thousands of seasonal workers who join us at this time of year play an integral role in helping us deliver an exceptional experience for our customers during this incredibly busy time. We look forward to welcoming back those workers who join us each and every Christmas as well as many new faces who are joining the Amazon team for the first time.

"We're excited to be creating 13,000 seasonal jobs, hundreds of which will lead to permanent, full-time positions. We have created more than 2,000 new permanent roles at our fulfilment centres in the last two years, taking our total permanent fulfilment and customer service centre workforce to over 6,000 employees." The company will now begin to recruit the temporary staff. Last year an extra 1,500 seasonal jobs were created at Jersey Marine to cope with the Christmas rush. Amazon has invested over Pounds 1 billion in its UK operations to date and says that its implementation of new programmes and ways of working has benefited the entire workforce.
