Hitchcock native Michael Sam, the first openly gay player drafted in the NFL, was cut from the Cowboys practice squad on Tuesday.

Sam joined the Cowboys on Sept 3, after he was cut by the St. Louis Rams, who selected him 249th overall in the 2014 draft.

Sam was an All-American defensive lineman at the University of Missouri.

“I want to thank the Jones family and the entire Cowboys organization for this opportunity,” Sam wrote on Twitter, “as well as my friends, family, teammates and fans for their support. While this is disappointing, I will take the lessons I learned here in Dallas and continue to fight for an opportunity to prove that I can play every Sunday.”
